Mersal Overseas, Raja The Great Overseas
Tamil biggie Mersal starring, Vijay in the lead role, registered solid figures in the just concluded weekend at the overseas box office. The film, directed by Atlee, took a sensational opening in overseas with a $400K haul from its Tuesday premiers and went on to pile up solid figures in the first weekend. After collecting $155K and $96K on Wednesday and Thursday respectively, Mersal notched up a stunning $ 207K and $306K on Friday and Saturday respectively to take the total past the prestigious $ 1M mark. On Sunday, Mersal poised to collect $150K extending its total beyond $1.3M in North America.
Telugu film Raja The Great, starring Ravi Teja, has thoroughly disappointed the trade circles with its poor run in the first weekend. The film started off well at the overseas box office with a promising $133K from its Tuesday premiers. The film managed to collect $43K and $20K on Wednesday and Thursday. However, the had film failed to collect promising figures towards the weekend with a disappointing $40K and $ 54K on Friday and Saturday respectively.
On Sunday, too, it had a poor run with $30K and the total stands just above $310K, which means the buyers are likely to incur approximately 55 percent loss on their investment.
The lacklustre script and the forced comedy didn’t go well with the NRI audience and resulted in a poor run for Raja The Great. Ravi Teja commands a decent market in USA. His previous films Kick-2, Power and Balupu collected $345K, $380K and $450K despite being poor to average films, that too way back in 2-3 years old market conditions. Given the background, one could estimate how badly Raja The Great performed in USA.
