In the din of slogan -shouting of TRS workers and associated fireworks after the resounding win of the Pink party in GHMC elections, everybody has forgotten one man- YS Jaganmohan Reddy. The YSRC president is quite unaffected by the low percentage of votes and TRS’ landslide victory. He doesn’t require any soul-searching. He doesn’t need to do postmortem to diagnose what went wrong, where and how. Because, YSRCP is the only party which said it was not contesting the GHMC polls. So, Jagan is spared of the ignominy of a humiliating defeat in the GHMC elections. On the day when Jagan issued statement that his party was not contesting the polls many people suspected foul play in the decision and said it was a pretext to help TRS.
Jagan said the party had no strength to contest the polls and it would rather work to strengthen the party than fielding the candidates in GHMC elections. Now, in hindsight Jagan seems to have assessed the situation right and avoided the inevitable defeat, which would have badly affected the morale of the party workers in Hyderabad, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
The high-decibel campaign of the opposition parties involving allegations and counter allegations did not yield anything. While Congress won only one seat despite the deployment national leaders like Digvijay Singh, Renuka Chowdary etc., TDP which kicked up enough dust by roping in Andhra Pradesh chief minister for a two-day hectic campaign also ended up as single seat party. BJP’s Venkaiah Naidu entertained Hyderabadis with his rhymes and rhythms gaining nothing in return. The party’s tally is just three.
Against this backdrop what Jagan did appears to be a wise decision. Whatever might be the compelling reason for his party’s decision against contesting the polls , the reason Jagan put forth is justified.
