Achampet Nagar Panchayat of Telangana has become the first local body of the state without opposition. In the elections held for the Nagar Panchayat on March 6, the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samiti registered clean sweep by winning all the wards leaving nothing for the grand alliance formed by the comibination of TDP, Congress and BJP. The town, located at the foothills of Nallamala ranges, has 20 wards. In the election, all the wards were bagged by TRS. Counting of votes of Achampet took place today along with the counting for Warangal and Khammam municipal corporations. The pink party recorded absolute majority in Warangal and Khammam corporations as well.
The election results are more humiliating for the TDP as it could not open account in any of the local bodies. All opposition parties- TDP, Congress and BJP formed a Grand Alliance in Achampet to stop the TRS winning spree. But voters dashed the hopes of the Alliance. The performance of Congress is slightly better in Warangal and Khamma where the party won 4 and 10 divisions respectively. The TRS won 44 out 58 wards in Warangal while it bagged 34 out of 50 wards in Khammam.
Reacting on the results, Nizambad MP Kavita, daughter of chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, said the electons vindicated the people’s confidence in TRS and the leadership of K CR. she said the same performance would be repeated even in the 2009 elections as well.
