Anxiety fuels among cricket lovers and citizens of Hyderabad, as former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin’s name surfaced in the news, nearly after a decade, in an attempt to play key role in promotion of the sport in Hyderabad.
Setting aside the controversies around his cricketing career, Azharuddin today filed his nomination for contesting the Presidential elections of Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA). The former MP from Mordabad in Uttar Pradesh said that he was unhappy with the way things are going on in the association and said, “I would like to bring some sanity.”
After the BCCI imposed a life ban for his alleged involvement in match-fixing when the scandal first broke out in 2000, he has been keeping away from cricket world. Though the High Court has set aside the ban imposed on him in 2012, BCCI is yet to revoke the same.
In spite of imposing ban, for the first time, a few months ago BCCI invited him, along with other captains, to facilitate Indian cricket team’s historic 500th Test match.
Incidentally, he is not a formal member of HCA. So, cricket lovers are wondering, if a non-member can contest for the post of President in an organisation. Azharuddin said on this occasion that he has decided to contest for the position only to increase the focus of the city towards Cricket, so that it would flourish again here. “After observing that the city has been going down in this sport since some time with a burdened heart, I have decided to take lead to encourage the sport,” he added.
