According to sources, the Andhra Pradesh Government is considering a seat belt awareness campaign to educate people about the importance of the lifesaving function of seat belts. In the wake of the tragic car accident involving APCOB Chairman Pinnamaneni Venkateswara Rao’s family, the Govt seems to have decided to do something about it. Though the veteran politician was travelling in a Mitsubishi Pajero sport, only the passenger side airbag deployed, as only one seat belt was worn. This saved the life of Venkateswara Rao. His wife and driver were not wearing seat belts, preventing the deployment of air bags.

In the past, many high profile politicians and celebrities like Lal Jan Basha, Shoba Nagireddy, Nandamuri Janakiram etc. have lost their lives in road accidents. Even though they all travelled in high end cars, the non usage of seat belts led to fatal deaths. The Government is now planning to create an awareness campaign by roping in Telugu Film celebrities to spread the message about the importance of seat belts.

A committee may be formed in the coming weeks to look into the matter.
