Demanding that the vice chancellor Apparao Podile be removed from the process of selection Obudsman for university, students University of Hyderabad conducted protest-demonstrations today which later led to their arrest. The protesting questioned the involvement of vice chancellor, who is under scrutiny of judicial commission and courts, in the selection of ombudsman. They shouted a person who was responsible for the suicide of Rohit Vemula , a dalit research scholar, should not be allowed to discharge duties of a vice chancellor.
The distinction the HCU won in the ranking of Hyderabad failed to have had any effect on the unrest on the campus. Hyderabad Central University has been adjudged as the fourth best university in India by an agency commissioned by union HRD ministry.
Today, with heavy deployment of police, the campus of university looked like police camp. Security arrangement were in full measure in view of the Chalo HCU called by various students organizations, including the JAC for social justice. This time, the university took precaution to summon some women personnel also. Police did not allows the students enter the campus and they tried break open the gate, police took them into custody. Some students could successfully sneak into campus tried reach out to the vice chancellor who was conducting the academic council meeting. But police foiled their attempt. Students said about 75 had been arrested by the police. Students alleged that police were brutal towards the women students.
Students raised slogans against vice chancellor. ” Vice chancellor Apparao has converted the campus into police camp. We don’t want Apparao to continue in the postion,” the striking students said.
According to sources in the university, a lot of damage was caused to the image of the university.” Majority of the teaching staff could take the classes. Students did dare attend the college. About a lakh man hour have been lost during the closure of the university following the unrest,” the sources said.
