Telangana Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Telangana Amendment Act, 2016) amendment bill has been approved by the Central government. The Union Home Ministry has sent the bill to Rashtrapati Bhavan for approval. The bill is likely to get President’s approval in a couple of days. The bill will become law after the President’s assent.
Telangana government came up with a new land acquisition act in December 2016 modifying the Central Government’s Land Acquisition Act 2013. After facing resistance from opposition parties in obtaining land for several irrigation projects, the TRS government tweaked the 2013 act and passed it in December 2016. However, the Department of Legal Affairs of the Union Ministry of Law and Justice recommended a few procedural and terminology-related amendments to make the bill immune to litigation.
The Telangana assembly convened on April 30,2017 and passed suggested amendments within 10minutes and sent it back to the Law Ministry, amid protests by the opposition parties.
After the Presiden’t assent, the land acquisition process in the state will be done swiftly. Subsequently, several irrigation projects will be accomplished in the estimated time.
