After fighting over sharing river waters, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana State locked horns over another inter-State dispute. With TS’s debt increasing to 4480-crore rupees, the GoAP has ordered APGENCO to stop power supply to the youngest state.
APGENCO stopped distributing about 450 Megawatts of power to Telangana from the midnight of June 6. As per the Reorganisation act, 53 percent of power generated in AP will be granted to TS while AP will utilize the remaining 47 percent. Based on TS discoms calculations the number has turned out to be 450 MW even though TS share is 53 percent. TS officials alleged that the 53 percent quota is not supplied diligently.
The power consumption has reduced in TS with the onset of Monsoon. On March 31, the state witnessed peak power of 9200 MW which is now 7200 MW. Due to the reduction in consumption of power for agriculture purpose, TS officials see hardly any impact on the state. However, TSGENCO is allegedly taking measures to purchase power from other external sources in case of shortage.
If reports are to be believed, there are no provisions to pay the dues to AP in the budget this year. Only in the next budget provisions can be made for the payment, if the TS government intends to do so.
TSGENCO also reportedly said that it would suspended the supply of coal from the Singareni Collieries to AP. The APGENCO is seeking assistance from the Southern Regional Power Committee in recovering the dues.
