YSRCP boycotting assembly sessions
In any democracy, opposition party is as important as ruling party for it is there to question the government of the day and hold them accountable to the public. Opposition represents an alternative government, and is responsible for challenging the policies of the government and producing different policies where appropriate. In the wake of this importance given to opposition, Jagan’s move to boycott assembly comes as a shocker to many. Moreover the reason that they stated for this is the inaction of speaker on defected MLAs.
Already there have been news that some of the senior leaders in YSRCP itself objected this movie but Jagan wanted to go ahead. Obviously, Jagan is missing out the opportunity to highlight the mistakes of ruling TDP in assembly. There have been lot of things to be raised like Amaravati not finishing as per planned schedule, Polavaram will not be finished by 2019 as planned, ever prolonging kapu reservation issue, farmer’s issues, and the list is almost endless. Instead of discussing these things, Jagan’s team boycotted the assembly and it sends the negative message that he doesn’t want to play the role of opposition leader properly but he wants power.
Moreover, CBN and his team members like Yanamala are very seniors and they seem to know how to turn this move to their advantage. Already Yanamala is saying they will show the people how constructive and nice will be the assembly sessions if Jagan is not there in the assembly.
It is well known to the people of the state that Jagan doesnt want to disrupt his padayatra because of the assembly sessions or at any other cost. For him, pada yatra seems to be very important. But he has to break it for court cases every Friday. If he can break it for the cases against him, why cant he break it for Assembly and the people is the question people get. In fact he could have started pada yatra immediately after the assembly sessions as there is still ample time for elections.
For all this, the reason Jagan mentions is political defections orchestrated by CBN. What Jagan and his party could have done if turncoats is the main issue is this . They could have formed a team of intellectuals and proposed the modifications to 10th Schedule of constitution (like having a fixed time frame in which speaker has to take defection or even moving out the action from speaker to EC in case of defectors) which deals with political defections and then they could have met other political parties in the country which are in opposition and collectively they could have submitted it to the president. Even though President can not initiate constitutional amendment, it would have triggered a wide debate across the country including in national media which could have been definitely great embarrassment to Chandra Babu. To be frank, that could have brought more mileage to Jagan than boycotting the assembly and also that could have put CBN into more embarrassment than boycotting the assembly. In any case, this move of Jagan to boycott assembly will be remembered for long as a bad strategy.
